“A Place at the Table”
The Go Team, standing for Get Out!, is a select group of people who live in Developmental Centers in New Jersey. They are people who use Values Into Action-New Jersey supports coordination services and who have volunteered to be a part of a self advocacy group. The focus of this group is around issues of social justice; the struggle for independence and the attainment of personal freedom and full civil rights.
Since 2008, the VIA-NJ team has arranged for these representatives to attend a monthly meeting. With assistance, the Go Team has elected officers who lead and facilitate dialogue among their members. This group has set goals for itself, including presence at national conferences and collaboration with other advocacy groups. They have just recently incorporated as a non-profit organization of its own. This group demonstrates the importance of adults advocating for themselves and working to assure everyone has a "place at the table."
